The UCAT is a computer-based aptitude test that medical and dental schools use to shortlist applicants alongside academic grades and interviews. Rather than testing subject knowledge, it measures how you reason, make decisions, and judge situations under time pressure, skills the UCAT Consortium considers directly relevant to clinical practice.

Anyone applying for undergraduate or graduate medical, dental, and clinical science degree programs at member universities in the UK should take the UCAT exam. If you are applying to a participating Australian or New Zealand university, you should take the UCAT ANZ instead.

Here are a few points to keep in mind while booking the UCAT exam.

• Dual-destination applicants: If you are applying to both a UK university and an Australian or New Zealand university for 2027 entry, take the UCAT ANZ only. Taking both the UCAT and UCAT ANZ in the same year is treated as candidate misconduct, and both sets of results can be withdrawn.
• Graduate-entry applicants: The UCAT is also a requirement for several graduate medicine programmes in the UK, so a prior undergraduate degree does not exempt you from taking UCAT.
• Returning candidates: If you appeared for the UCAT in a previous year and did not get the outcome you needed, you can retake it, but your score from a prior cycle cannot be carried forward. Each year's result is valid only for that year's application cycle.

The UCAT syllabus covers four separately timed subtests, all in multiple-choice format. You do not need to memorise a conventional academic syllabus because the test focuses on reasoning, problem-solving, decision-making and professional judgement.

UCAT exam testing windows are open from 13 July 2026 to 24 September 2026. Registrations for the 2026 UCAT testing cycle opened on 23rd June 2026 and will close on 16 September,2026. Here are the key UCAT exam dates in India.

The UCAT is delivered through Pearson VUE test centres, the same network used for exams like the GMAT and TOEFL iBT. So India has several UCAT test centres across metro, tier-2, and tier-3 cities.  UCAT test centres are available in the following cities in India:

• Metropolitan Cities: Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, and Ahmedabad.
• Tier -2/ Tier 3 Centres: Chandigarh, Noida, Gurugram, Indore, Bhopal, Nagpur, Surat, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi, Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Vellore, Manipal, Mysore, and Coimbatore.

The UCAT 2026 has no formal age or specific academic requirement. You can take the test if you have completed or are in your final year of secondary education. 

Here are key eligibility rules for the UCAT Exam.

• Education stage: You must have completed, or be in your final year of, secondary education (10+2 in the Indian system) or hold an equivalent qualification.
• Attempts per cycle: You can take the UCAT only once within a given testing year, though you can retake it in a subsequent year if needed.
• Conflict of interest: Anyone affiliated with a UCAT coaching business, as a tutor, content developer, or through a financial stake, is barred from taking the test.

You can register for the UCAT online through your UCAT account, with the process divided into three main stages. You should complete each stage as early as possible because your choice of test dates and centres may become limited as the September deadline approaches. Here is a step-by-step guide to register for the UCAT exam.

• Step 1: Create your UCAT account: Create a new UCAT account on the UCAT Consortium website, even if you had one in a previous year, as returning candidates need a fresh account for the current cycle.
• Step 2: Complete registration: Open your dashboard and click "Start Test Registration." Review your details, agree to the testing policies, and confirm. You'll see authorisation to take the UCAT appear on your dashboard once this is done. 

• Step 3: Book your test and pay the fee: Select "Book Your Test," and choose your preferred test centre, date, and time. Pay the UCAT fees by debit or credit card. You'll receive a booking confirmation email with your appointment details and a separate payment confirmation email as a receipt.

UCAT registration fees for Indian students are £115 (INR 14,800) for the 2026 test cycle. This fee is fully inclusive of tax, though your local bank may apply a standard foreign currency transaction fee.

• Reschedule: You must change your exam date at least 24 hours in advance, or pay £115 again to rebook.
• Cancellation: You must cancel your booking online at least 24 hours before the exam to avoid losing your payment.
• Refund: Full refunds are only granted is cancellation request is made before 24 hours, while late cancellations or no-shows receive no refund.

The UCAT is scored on a scale of 900-2,700 and is valid for one admission cycle. Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, and Quantitative Reasoning are scored on a range of 300-900, and the three combine into a total cognitive score of 900-2700. Situational Judgement is scored separately, on a scale of Bands 1 to 4, with Band 1 the strongest outcome.

• Verbal Reasoning: Each correct answer earns 1 mark.
• Decision Making: Single-answer questions earn 1 mark, while multiple-statement questions are worth 2 marks, with 1 mark awarded for a partially correct response.
• Quantitative Reasoning: Each correct answer earns 1 mark.
• Situational Judgement: Full marks go to responses matching the expert panel's answer, with partial marks for responses that are close.
• Mean cognitive score: For the 2025 cycle, the final mean cognitive score across 41,354 candidates was 1891, with average subtest scores of 602 (Verbal Reasoning), 628 (Decision Making), and 661 (Quantitative Reasoning).
• Situational Judgement Score: In 2025, 21% of candidates achieved Band 1, 39% Band 2, 29% Band 3, and 10% Band 4 in Situational Judgement.

UCAT scores are valid only for the admissions cycle in which you take the test. For example, scores from the UCAT 2026 exam will only be valid for 2027 and deferred 2028 entry. You cannot carry a score forward to a future year's applications, which is why you should time your test to align with the intake you are actually applying for.

You'll see a preliminary result on-screen immediately after finishing the test, with your official score report available in your UCAT account within 24 hours. Universities receive your scores automatically, so you don't need to send them manually.

Fifty universities across the UK UCAT Consortium and Partner network require the UCAT for 2027 entry. Participating universities in Australia and New Zealand require UCAT ANZ, so confirm which test your chosen university requires before registering.

Only two New Zealand universities have medical schools, and both require UCAT ANZ for their Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programs.

Most successful candidates spend 6 to 10 weeks on focused UCAT preparation rather than months of unstructured practice, since the test rewards speed and pattern recognition over accumulated subject knowledge.

Here are a few tips to help you prepare for the UCAT exam.

• Learn the interface first: Work through the official tour tutorial before you start practising questions. Familiarise yourself with the on-screen calculator, flag-and-review function and screen navigation so these features do not slow you down on test day.
• Build section-specific technique: Use fast skimming in Verbal Reasoning to identify conclusions rather than reading every passage closely. Practise using the on-screen calculator efficiently in Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning. For Situational Judgement, focus on applying consistent ethical reasoning instead of choosing what simply sounds correct.
• Practise under strict timing from week one: The UCAT gives you limited time for each question, so introduce timed practice from the beginning rather than waiting until the final weeks. 
• Save the four official practice tests for last: Use these tests closer to your exam date because they provide a more representative simulation of the actual UCAT. Avoid using them all during your initial preparation. 
• Target your weak subtest, not your strong one: Focus more practice on the areas where you consistently lose marks. Since your three cognitive scores contribute to your overall score and SJT is reported separately, improving a weak cognitive section can make a bigger difference than repeatedly practising a section you already handle well. 

You should treat your UCAT test date as the anchor of your medicine or dentistry application timeline. Since you need to take the test well before your UCAS application deadline, you should plan your preparation backwards from your chosen test date and build your university research, application planning and other commitments around it.
