With the influx of international students studying in the US, the employment search after graduation has also become more rigorous and competitive. The continuing pandemic, the unpredictability of the market, and the increasing cost of living might have left you considering, “What after MS in US?”

If you are one of those students, this article will answer your questions and provide a structure to the endless possibilities that still lie ahead of you.

What to Do After MS in the USA?

For international students, there are 2 options on what to do after MS in USA based on your convenience, qualifications, and future plan:

  1. Find a Job

  2. Study Further

Let’s consider these options in detail --

  1. Finding a Job:

As mentioned earlier, finding a job in this economy, especially with the pandemic, is proving to be quite difficult. To add to the burden, working in the US requires an H1-B visa (or rather, a work visa), and unlike the Student Visa, you cannot apply to the former yourself. Your potential employer will have to do that for you. Thus, work possibilities for international students are less as compared to their local counterparts.

But there are still a few options you could consider to improve your chances of procuring a job:

  • Summer Internships:

Some students begin their job search early and apply for various internships during their previous summer break itself. This is an important option to consider since it might strengthen your resume in time for the placement season.

  •  Networking:

More than 70% of jobs are acquired through connections and networking. International students should build valuable networks in the industry of their choice by contacting your college alumni or through platforms like LinkedIn.

  • Choosing the Right Location:

Places like New York, Texas, and even California are known to be more accepting of international students and, thus, may be more lucrative in terms of procuring a job.

  • Optional Practical Training (OPT):

The OPT allows international students to work in the US in their field of study for a period of 12 months, mostly after completion of their degree. Those from the STEM fields commonly go for this option. The best part about OPT is that you do not need a job offer to apply for it, unlike the H1-B visa. All you require is an Employment Authorization Document. Your university’s international student services team can help you with this process.

  • Talk to a Career Counsellor:

Lastly, talking to a career counsellor at your university or through a consultancy firm might provide more clarity to your future plans and help you strengthen your resume as well as shortlist companies that pique your interest.

  1.  Study Further -

This option is particularly viable for those interested in research work. If you are considering pursuing a Ph.D. in your field of study instead of immediately applying for a job, the two most important things to keep in mind are a) the application process; and b) the visa requirements.

Application for PhD in USA:

  1. Decide university of choice:

Different universities have different application demands in terms of your scores, SOPs, and the kind of program they offer. Make sure you choose a university reputed for their PhD program in your field of study.

  1. Build a network with the potential supervisor:

This is considered the most important aspect of the application process. Once you have decided on a particular university, it might help tremendously if the supervisor of the faculty of your choice agrees to take you on board. Thus, consider reaching out to the supervisor via email and elaborating on your interest in the field.

  1. Prepare a statement of purpose (sop) as part of the application:

The SOP presents a detailed view of your interest in the field and your abilities as a researcher. With a logical, creative and unique SOP, your chances of being accepted into the University increase multi-fold.

  1. Deadlines for applications:

Another thing to remember is that most universities in the US encourage students to start applying as early as possible, even though the deadline is generally between December and February. You will subsequently get a response by April.

Another important thing to remember here is that Universities in the US require a TOEFL score of around 90 for international students to apply.

Along with it, some other important documents required are:

  1. Resume

  2. Work Experience Certificates

  3. Letter of Recommendation

  4. Passport

  5. Academic transcripts (including your GRE score sheet)

  b) Visa for PhD in USA:

  • International students require an F1student visa to apply for a PhD in the USA. This visa, however, allows students to only work on campus and for only 20 hours a week.

  • An amount of 360 USD is to be paid at the time of submitting the visa application. This amount includes the SEVIS fee (200 USD) as well as the application fee (160 USD) but does not include the visa issue fee. The latter must be paid upon approval by the authorities.

In conclusion, now that all the possibilities have been laid out before you, consider which one best aligns with your plan for your future. Remember to choose ambitiously, wisely, and carefully!
