Eberhard Karl University of Tubingen, or the University of Tubingen, is a public university in Tübingen, Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
Tubingen is among eleven German universities recognized as "Excellence" institutions. While the University of Tubingen has long been regarded as a center at the University of plant biology and medicine, it has also emerged as a leader in artificial intelligence and ancient history, philosophy, and religion. Eleven Nobel laureates have had a connection to the institution, and several of them were in the disciplines of medicine or chemistry. Presidents, EU Commissioners, and justices of the Federal Constitutional Court are a few of the University's notable graduates.
It was Count Eberhard V, subsequently the first Duke of Württemberg. He created the University of Tubingen in 1477 as a civic & ecclesiastic reformer after getting engaged in the Renaissance of knowledge in Italy. Johannes Nauclerus was its first rector. In 1769, Duke Karl Eugen added his first name to the founder to give it its current name. Later, the institution has renamed the University of Württemberg and the University of Württemberg. Currently, it is one of nine state-funded universities in Baden-Württemberg.
