Umea University is in Umea in the mid northern region of Sweden. It is the 5th oldest university in Sweden. It is internally known for research relating to the genome of the Populus tree and the Norway Spruce and its highly ranked institute of Industrial Design.

The university has a large amount of students. Today the total of students - including those at the postgraduate level - is approximately 32,000. Many of these students are taking courses via distance education, or online learning. There are 2,113 teachers and researchers employed by the university.

The Master’s in Business Development and Internalization is a great program. The program focuses on theoretical and practical knowledge. It makes you develop your innovation, strategic and entrepreneurship skills. It will also expand your network and your own business. It is a program offered AACSB .

The university is in Umea in the norther region of Sweden.

Now let us talk about the city. There are many operas in Umea. Aside from this there is the annual Jazz festival. For music lovers you will find many metal bands in Umea like hollow, Nocturnal rites, etc. Also there are a lot of hardcore punk banks like final exit, refused, etc.

The town has been designated as the European capital of culture.

For sports fans there are 4 major sports clubs. Two hockey teams, as well football teams. There is also a roller derby team.


So lets go over the various infrastructure available.

Students with Disabilities such as dyslexia, ADHD or impaired visions. They have support such as assistance with taking notes during lectures, extended time or using a computer with special software during an examination.

Now let us look at the Umea Arts Campus Library

The library specialises in books, films, journals and electronic resources within the contemporary arts, architecture and design. The collections are searchable on the Umeå University Library web and in the national catalogue LIBRIS. Besides this, the library provides access to materials databases and samples. The library organises lectures and small exhibitions. All events are free and open to the public.

The Umea University has a specialized facility called Sliperiet. It is a multidisciplinary environment for innovations and meetings offering prototype workshops with digital equipment of highest international class for researchers, students and startups. This allows people of different disciplines and vocations to inspire each other to develop and implement ideas. Sliperiet offer a prototype lab and studios with powerful, digital production technology where models and media can be produced with the help of cuttingedge technology. Sliperiet also has Uminova eXpression – a business incubator that supports the development of new ideas, innovations, service-based business concepts and know-how intensive companies in cultural, artistic and creative trades early on. Sliperiet is also home to Sweden’s first FabLab – digital workshops open to the public, with the aim to strengthen and aid local innovations by offering technology,

Another interesting facility is HUMLAB-X. It is an amalgamation of digital technology and the humanities. Here researchers, teachers, artists, technicians and students can have practical and theoretical meetings. The lab is a digital place for experiments. Here, you can find a display studio, a large interactive floor, work stations, 3D printers, scanners and a wet lab. The wet lab is used in courses and workshops, often for beginners and open to everyone.

The University also has a hospital and research centre for medical care and medicine. In cooperation with the university that hosts 1 school of medicine and dental medicine in Sweden.

Residing Options

Umea University has its own International Housing Office. They assist tuition fee paying students and exchange students. They offer single occupancy student rooms. The accommodation is off campus but within walking distance of the campus. They offer about 600 student rooms in 5 different student housing areas. These dorms have about 6-10 students.

Now about Private housing.

Umea does not advise relying on finding accommodation on your own. Instead register with the municipal housing company Bostaden. It will help you find an apartment.


The university offers 30 degrees programmes. The teaching staff maintains a high level of scientific, pedagogic and professionally linked expertise. According to Times Higher Education "Golden Age" Universities 2018, Umea ranks in top 50 universities across the globe in terms of teaching.

The student reviewed Umea 4.7 stars out of 5. This is based of 35 reviews. Most students stated they were very happy with their teachers and their teaching methods. Although, there is a little criticism regarding the infrastructure that the classes are small.

Jobs and placements

One thing worth nothing is that the University Alumni network has over 20,000 members across 100 countries. This network is really helpful professionally.

Now let us talk about the placements.

They have placements for the bachelor programs. Now the Biomedical analyst programme offers 5 students a work placement in a clinical laboratory or a research laboratory. BMA students are also welcomed to carry out training at our department.

During the summer months, students with relevant education to try research. The student receives a tax free scholarship. They also have internship for the school of business, economics and statistics. The internship course is part of the curriculum. Moreover the international Business programme as well as the master’s programmes have an internship course included in their course. The Master’s programme in tourism also has a work placement where you can work with researchers, and with various private sectors

There is also project work with external partners. The programme combines theoretic and creative workshops and intensive skill development. There is a great deal of time is devoted to project work with external partners like research institutions or design department with different companies.
