No, although the calls for applications expressly target junior scientists. Those who have gotten their doctorates no more than seven years ago or no more than nine years ago, in the case of medicine, are given preference.

No, academic qualification is neither required nor advantageous for leading an MPRG. Professors at a nearby university are frequently Max Planck Research Group Leaders.
