Luther College is known as a private liberal arts college in Decorah, Iowa. It was established in 1861 as a Lutheran seminary. Luther College is located in Decorah, Iowa. Decorah is the county seat and the largest community in Winneshiek County. Decorah's largest place of employment is Luther College, in addition to several national corporations. Winneshiek County's economy is primarily based on farming. Decorah serves as an agricultural hub and it’s home to Seed Savers Exchange, an heirloom plant farm and preservation organization. Decorah is also the home of the Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum which is the largest Norwegian museum in the United States.


Luther college owns 800 acres (320 ha) devoted to environmental research, biological studies, and recreation. Luther infrastructure includes residence halls and several houses, townhouses, and apartment buildings which encourages about Ninety-five percent of Luther students to live on campus all four years of study. The college also has its lecture rooms which are adequately equipped for lectures, libraries which are stock with necessary materials for research, I.T. centers and other academic buildings for the advancement of education.

The Koren building is one of the oldest on campus and it houses Luther’s social sciences departments. The Center for Faith and Life is Luther's college largest and primary performing arts facility on campus.

Residing Options

Luther college offers newly renovated, modern, and welcoming residence halls. Luther is a residential college by design which believes that students learn best when they are fully based on the campus. This includes learning and living. The first year students rooms are equipped with social and study lounges, wireless internet, computer labs, laundry rooms, and kitchens. The first-year students have the option of living on Wellness and Quiet floors.

Students who are currently living on campus will have to select their next year’s housing through a room draw, with high preference given to students with the highest number of credit hours completed. The Upper-class student housing includes college-owned houses, apartments, or townhouses, or clusters and suites in on-campus residence halls.


Luther College is an exclusively undergraduate institution, which enrolls 2,337 students. The college currently employs 177 full-time faculty and academic staff. Its faculty to student ratio is 1:13. The college promotes gender diversity by having 45 percent male students and 55 percent of female students
