The university was founded in 1969 as Clayton Junior College and became a four-year institution in 1986. 1996 the name was changed to Clayton State College and State University. The current name, Clayton State University, was adopted in 2005.

The campus is located in the north-central part of Clayton County in suburban south metro Atlanta, about a 15-minute drive from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and about 20 minutes from downtown Atlanta.
