Applications Invited For The British Council GREAT Scholarships

The UK is one of the top study destinations for many international students including Indians. At present, there are 55,465 Indian students studying in the UK, as per the latest UK government data. From the world-recognized universities to the innovative teaching approaches, the QS World University Rankings 2022 lists four UK universities among the world’s top 10, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2022 feature four from the country among the top 20. The UK also offers a wide range of financial funding to international students across various disciplines.

One such scheme is the GREAT Scholarships, the UK government’s flagship initiative in association with the British Council. Applications are inhibited for the 2022-23 session for various postgraduate courses for students from 18 countries to study in UK Universities.

 

What The Scheme Includes

  • GREAT Scholarships are open to students from 18 countries
  • Applications from students who are going to join UK universities at the postgraduate levels for the 2022-2023 academic year will be considered
  • The scholarship will award an amount of £10,000 towards the tuition fees of the postgraduate course

Students from countries such as Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nepal, Singapore, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Malaysia, Turkey, Vietnam.

Students must meet the English proficiency requirements as set by the universities.

The scholarships will be awarded to high-calibre students to study full-time for a period of one year. Each scholarship will award an amount of £10,000 towards tuition fees of the postgraduate course. 

There is an annual welcome event for all the GREAT scholars in the first semester and a networking event in the second semester as part of the program.

In order to be eligible for the GREAT scholarships, the students have to be academically excellent and dedicated. Having work experience or proven interest in the chosen field will be advantageous for applicants. They should also be eager to explore and engage in extra-curricular activities.

The participating universities in UK GREAT scholarship scheme include Bishop Grosseteste University; Cranfield University; Edinburgh Napier University; Falmouth University; Goldsmiths, University of London; Keele University; Newcastle University; Queen's University Belfast; Robert Gordon University; Royal Agricultural University; Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance; University of Derby; University of East Anglia; University of Edinburgh; University of Kent; University of Manchester; University of Plymouth; University of St Andrew's; and University of Southampton. 

The application deadline varies according to each university, details of which can be found on individual institution websites.

Key Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must have an undergraduate degree, be keen to learn more about the proposed subject field, and should have the motivation to pursue it academically. 
  • Students also need to agree to connect with the British Council and their higher education institution and act as ambassadors for the GREAT Scholarships.
  • As alumni of the scheme, they might also be required to speak to potential candidates about their own experience of studying in the UK as and when required. 
  • Candidates must also establish an association with the UK as scholars, through personal and academic fulfilment.
