The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), also known as UT Chattanooga or simply Chattanooga, is a public university located in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Established in 1886, it is part of the University of Tennessee System. Originally founded as the private and racially exclusive Chattanooga University, it merged in 1889 with Grant Memorial University, which was based in Athens (now Tennessee Wesleyan University). This merger created the Chattanooga campus of U.S. Grant Memorial University.
In 1907, the institution was renamed the University of Chattanooga. Later, in 1964, it merged with Zion College, which had been founded in 1949 and later became Chattanooga City College. Finally, in 1969, the University of Chattanooga joined the University of Tennessee System and officially became the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
