Established on June 22, 1907, Tohoku University was the third imperial university in Japan, after the Imperial University of Tokyo and Kyoto Imperial University. In 2020 and 2021, this University was ranked as the No. 1 university in Japan by the Times Higher Education. It was also the first University in Japan to accept female students and foreign students. It is a public (national) university with the motto, "open-door policy," and since April 2004, it has been a National University Corporation. It currently has 5,765 administrative staff, 11,094 undergraduates, 7,704 postgraduates, and 1,346 international students.
