Texas Southern University (TSU) is a public historically black university in Houston, Texas. It is one of the largest and most comprehensive HBCUs in the United States, with nearly 8,000 students enrolled and over 100 academic programs. TSU is a member school of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund and it is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It is classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity".
TSU was founded in 1927 as a normal school to train teachers for black schools in Texas. The school was renamed Texas Southern University in 1947 and became a four-year institution.
