Established in 1926, Southern Oregon University is a public college focusing on liberal arts located in the United States. It was previously known as SOC or South Oregon College and SOSC or Southern Oregon State College . In the 2016 edition of Best Colleges in the nation, Southern Oregon got itself the 73rd rank. SOU is associated with the Council Of Public Liberal Arts College and the headquarters of both Jefferson Public Radio and Rogue Valley Television is situated within it.

Campus

Location

It is situated in Ashland, Oregon in the United States and since the town is not very big, the students can commute easily either by bikes or just by feet. The geographic location of SOU is unique because it provides its students with a special and unique learning opportunity. The mountains and rivers there do not only add to the visual appeal, they are also the classrooms and laboratories for majors such as hospitality and tourism, Outdoor leadership, environmental studies, science research, etc.

Campus

The main building is known as Churchill Hall which coincidently has a lot of similarities with Eastern Oregon University’s Inlow Hall. This building was created by John Bennes who has managed to maintain the unique Renaissance style.
Right from parking spaces to halls of residences, the campus of the University is equipped with all the important facilities. The campus has lecture halls like the Churchill Hall, Central Hall, Cox Hall, Cascade Hall etc. Then university also has a dedicated Arts building which consists of an Auditorium where different forms of visual arts are performed. The University also maintains a museum which is known as the Schneider Museum of Arts where there a number of artistic objects kept for students as well as visitors to see. This museum organizes a number of different events which are open for all.

Residing Options

Students have the option to stay in the eldest residence hall on campus called Susanne Homes if they match the criteria of having at least 45 credits. The rooms in the hall have sinks, mini fridges and stove tops and so the students have their own semi kitchen and can cook what they like at any time they want. There is also the Madrone Apartment Complex which has apartments consisting of four rooms each, two bathrooms and a common kitchen and living area. Apart from these two, students can also stay in the recently made residence halls called Shasta Hall and McLoughlin Hall.
The University has a classified section of its website in which it lists down the names of some of the reputed real estate agents who can help students in finding the right kind of accommodation. Some of the preferred areas or neighborhoods by the students are 495 Chestnut Street #15, 606 Fair Oaks Ct, 75B Wimer, 618 Fair Oaks Court, 1364 Iowa, 2300 Morada Lane, the Ashlander Apartments, 615 Talent Avenue#10 and so on. The average cost of these accommodations is around $1100.

Faculty

The student-faculty ratio is 21:1 and 44 percent of the classes have less than 20 students. Visual and Performing Arts, Psychology, Education, Social Sciences and Business along with Management are some of the popular majors here. SOU professors inspire their students towards quality learning and encourage them to implement their thoughts. The teacher ‘s first and foremost priority here is the student’s excellent academic accomplishments and their main aim to help the student apply his/he learning not only in the workforce but also to the outside world in all its entirety.

Jobs and placements

The Office of Career Connections situated in the campus provides various employment opportunities to the students. The placement cell promises that by the time you are done with it you will end up with your dream job be it overseas or in the nation itself. They prepare you based on your needs like for instance if you are looking for a job immediately after school, they would teach you the art of writing resumes which will leave a good impression on your future employer.
