The Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta, commonly known as "LUMSA," is a private Roman Catholic university in Rome founded in 1939. It is the city’s second-oldest university, following Sapienza. Originally established as the "Istituto Superiore di Magistero Maria Ss. Assunta," LUMSA began as an educational institute for nuns, founded by Luigia Tincani under Royal Decree No. 1760 on October 26, 1939.
Reorganised as "Libera Università Maria SS. Assunta" in 1989, it initially admitted only women, expanding to male students in 1991. LUMSA is a private Catholic institution with full academic autonomy, and its degrees hold the same recognition as those granted by public universities in Italy. Since 2017, Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo has served as President, heading a council that includes a Rector, two Pro-Rectors, a Director General, and additional council members.

University teaching at LUMSA is organised across three main departments:
