Loma Linda University traces its roots back to 1905, when John Burden and Ellen G. White, both members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, established what would become the Loma Linda Sanitarium. Their vision was to create a place of health and healing in alignment with Adventist beliefs.
In February 1906, a council of church leaders convened at Loma Linda. This gathering included faculty from both the Loma Linda school and Fernando Academy, along with the executive committee of the Southern California Conference. Together, they helped lay the foundation for what would eventually develop into a comprehensive health sciences university.

Loma Linda University actively secures research funding through grants from various organisations. These include support from the California Walnut Commission for walnut-related research, the Pfizer Public Health & Government Group for public health programming on television and the Internet, and the NSF Partnership for Innovation Grant, awarded in collaboration with the Larta Institute. A unique connection exists between Loma Linda University and Representative Jerry Lewis (R – San Bernardino), which was first highlighted in a Pulitzer Prize-winning exposé by Jerry Kammer. Lewis has been instrumental in securing funds for key university operations. Between 1998 and 2003, the university received $167.2 million in federal funds, making it the highest academic recipient in the country, surpassing the next leading institution, the University of South Florida, by nearly $60 million.
