Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is a collaborative institution formed through a partnership between the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex. Like other medical schools in the UK, it operates under the principles and standards outlined in Tomorrow's Doctors, a framework developed by the General Medical Council to guide the role of British practitioners. Since its establishment in 2003, BSMS has graduated over 1,500 doctors who now practice across the UK.
The school welcomed its first cohort of students in September 2003, offering a five-year medical degree programme. BSMS was founded as part of a broader initiative by the British Government to address the need for more trained medical professionals. Teaching

Most of the teaching occurs on the University of Sussex campus, and unlike many other medical schools, BSMS does not employ Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in its program.
Professional aspects of the course are delivered by the University of Brighton through its faculties of health, sciences, and engineering, drawing on expertise from other healthcare courses such as nursing and midwifery. In contrast, the University of Sussex focuses on biological sciences and anatomy teaching, facilitated by its proximity to the "John Maynard Smith" building within the School of Life Sciences. Nearby facilities, including the medical research building and the Genome Damage and Stability Centre (an MRC research facility), further support the Sussex contribution to the medical school.
