When Should You Take the SAT?

There is no exact right time to take the SAT, because students usually take it between classes 11 and 12. Some even opt for the SAT once high school is over, giving them ample time to prepare for the exam. Since school work and board exams get really hectic, time management is an issue.

Take the SAT exam 4-5 months before your college application deadlines. Since board exams in India are over by April, this gives you ample time to retake the exam if necessary.  You also need to have enough time to prepare your college applications, write essays, and take the English proficiency tests. Since this will be the first time, it may get a little overwhelming, but don’t worry, thousands of students do it, and you can do it too!

You can also take a PSAT before the original SAT to help you better understand the process, format and structure of the paper.

How to Choose the Right SAT Exam Date?

The right SAT date is the one that fits your preparation level and application timeline. Plan ahead, align with your university deadlines, and leave time for retakes if needed.

If you’re targeting Fall 2026 admissions, consider taking the SAT by August 2025. This gives you enough time to focus on essays, recommendations, and the rest of your application.

If you’re in a gap year or prefer a later attempt, you can opt for the September, October, or November 2025 test dates, or even the Spring 2026 dates for final attempts.

When is the Next SAT Exam 2025?

The next SAT exam is on September 13, 2025. You must register by August 29, 2025, and late registration or changes are allowed until September 2, 2025.

If you missed the August test, this is your next chance. After September, the upcoming SAT dates are:

  • October 4, 2025 - Register by September 19, 2025
  • November 8, 2025 - Register by October 24, 2025
  • December 6, 2025 - Register by November 21, 2025

The SAT is held eight times a year, and many students retake it to improve scores.

How to Register for the SAT Exam 2025?

You can register for the SAT in 2 ways: Online and by mail. When doing it online, create an account on College Board, select your date and the test centre depending on your location and convenience. Pay the fee, and voila! You’re registered for the SAT.

The SAT registration involves 5-6 steps, so make sure you don’t miss out on any step and complete the process seamlessly.

Here are the steps you need to follow:

  • Step 1: Go to the www.collegeboard.org website and create an account.
  • Step 2: Fill in your necessary details - personal and academic information.
  • Step 3: Choose your convenient date and test centre.
  • Step 4: Upload a recent, passport-size photograph for verification. This is essential because your photo will be present on the SAT ticket needed on the exam date.
  • Step 5: Pay the application fee, which is USD 111 (or INR 9500). Pay it securely via credit or debit card. If you’re eligible for a fee waiver, this is when you apply for it.
  • Step 6: Review your application, double-check all details and submit. When confirmed, you’ll get an email with your SAT ticket and test centre details.

In case you’re registering via mail, you need to procure the “Student Registration Guide for the SAT” from your school counsellor. This usually contains a form and a return envelope. Fill out the form, attach a recent passport-size photograph, pay your fee through a demand draft, and mail the application.

Yocket Tip: Make sure you print your SAT exam ticket and carry it along with you on the day of the exam. This will avoid any last-minute hassles and help you with easy access to the exam centre.
