The University of Vienna is a public research institution located in Vienna, Austria. Established in 1365 by Duke Rudolph IV, it is the oldest university in the German-speaking world and ranks among the largest higher education institutions in Europe. Over its long history, the university has been associated with 16 Nobel Prize winners and has served as the academic home to numerous scholars of great historical and intellectual significance.

Founded on March 12, 1365, by Rudolf IV, Duke of Austria, the university is also known by the name "Alma Mater Rudolphina." It is the third oldest university in Central Europe, following Charles University in Prague (1347) and Jagiellonian University in Kraków (1364), making it the oldest institution of higher learning in the German-speaking world today.

Campus

The University of Vienna does not have a single centralized campus. Historically, it began operating in the First District, near the Jesuit Church. Today, the university's academic facilities are spread across more than sixty locations throughout the city. The historic main building, located on the Ringstraße, serves as the university’s center and is commonly referred to as "die Uni."

Many of the larger university facilities and lecture halls are situated nearby, in Vienna's First and Ninth Districts. These include the New Lecture Hall Complex (Neues Institutgebäude, NIG), the lecture hall complex on Althanstraße (UZA), the campus on the grounds of the former General Hospital of Vienna, and the Faculty of Law (Juridicum), among others. Additionally, the University of Vienna's Botanical Garden, the Department of Biochemistry, and associated research centers are located in the city's Third District.
