FAQ
1. If an international student who is currently attending American college, then, can his TOEFL be waived off?
Yes, provided that the applicant holds a degree or is enrolled full-time and is done with two academic years of university study in the United States before the projected date of admission to the University of Massachusetts.
2. What is the definition of an international student according to the university?
For undergraduate admission purpose, UMass Amherst terms "foreign applicants" as those with a non-immigrant visa, such as those with an F-1, J-1, H-1, or H-4 visa or status or those who are awaiting the outcome of their application for the status of permanent resident (i.e., pending Permanent Residents). For admissions reasons, a candidate's categorization as a domestic or foreign applicant is distinct from their designation as a "non-resident" or "resident" of Massachusetts for financial aid purposes. International students will be treated as out-of-state for the purposes of calculating residence for tuition.
3. Are there any scholarships available for international students?
International students of first-year who demonstrate academic achievement may be eligible for financial rewards. Separate application procedure for scholarship is not there; students are considered for the scholarship in the admission process itself.
4. Is it necessary to submit transcripts for the application?
The university does not review the applications without a minimum one unofficial transcript’s scanned copy. Once there is a formal acceptance in MS or PhD, then a student might mail and submit the official copy to the office before beginning of the semester, i.e., before the first day of the college.
5. If a student has accepted the MS program but wants to switch to a PhD program, is it possible?
No, the university only allows a person to apply in one program. If any student wants to apply for another program, he first needs to withdraw his application from the previous program. Once the application is withdrawn, the university does not guarantee the readmission.
