The University of Mary Hardin–Baylor (UMHB) has a rich history that dates back to the time before Texas became a U.S. state. Originally chartered by the Republic of Texas in 1845, it was established as the female department of Baylor University. Classes began in May 1846, in a small wooden building situated on a hillside in Independence, Washington County. The first class consisted of 24 students, both male and female.
Although the institution was coeducational, the classes were still segregated by gender. Over time, the university evolved into its own entity, growing and expanding, eventually becoming the University of Mary Hardin–Baylor. Today, it stands as a distinguished private Christian university in Belton, Texas.
