More rankings for this university

The Curtis Institute of Music, a private conservatory in Philadelphia, provides a range of programs, including a performance diploma, Bachelor of Music, Master of Music in opera, and a Professional Studies Certificate in opera. Every student at Curtis receives a full scholarship, and the institute also offers need-based financial aid to assist with living expenses.

Founded in 1924 by philanthropist and administrator Mary Louise Curtis Bok, the Curtis Institute of Music honours her father, publishing magnate Cyrus Curtis. Curtis’s establishment followed the creation of cultural institutions like the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1900 and the Philadelphia Opera Company in 1908, emerging during a period marked by Philadelphia’s industrial decline and political corruption.

Admission

The institute was originally established as a training ground for orchestral musicians to fill positions in the Philadelphia Orchestra. However, it now also offers programs for composers, organists, pianists, guitarists, and singers. Except for composers, conductors, pianists, organists, and guitarists, admission is limited to the number of students needed to staff a single orchestra and opera company, keeping the student body to a selective range of 150 to 175 students.

With an acceptance rate of only 4 percent, as reported by U.S. News & World Report, the institute is considered one of the most selective higher education institutions in the United States. Nina Simone, who auditioned for a scholarship in 1951 as one of 75 pianists, claimed her application was rejected due to racial discrimination, despite her strong qualifications and audition performance. Although only three applicants were accepted, Simone was posthumously honoured with an honorary diploma from the institute shortly before her death.

While the University continues to develop its academic programs and research initiatives, it remains unranked by these major international ranking institutions. This lack of ranking from Times Higher Education, and US News does not reflect the quality of education or research output; rather, it simply indicates that the university has not undergone formal assessment by these specific agencies.
