California State University, Chico is a public university located in Chico, California. Established in 1887, it began as one of nearly 180 "normal schools" created by state governments in the 19th century to train teachers for the expanding network of public common schools. While some of these schools eventually closed, most evolved over time, transitioning into state colleges by the early 20th century and later achieving university status in the latter half of the century. Chico State holds the distinction of being the second oldest campus in the California State University system.
As of the fall 2020 semester, Chico State had a total enrollment of 16,630 students. The university offers a wide range of academic programs, including 126 bachelor's degree programs, 35 master's degree programs, and four types of teaching credentials. The University is still awaiting its official rankings from prominent organisations such as QS, Times Higher Education, and US News and World Report. Despite its growing reputation and contributions to academia, the university has not yet been featured in the rankings published by these influential bodies. But it has been ranked at #20 in regional universities west of the U.S. News.
Although the University continues to develop its academic programs and research initiatives, it remains unranked by these major international ranking institutions. The absence of a ranking from QS, Times Higher Education, and US News does not reflect the quality of education or research output but simply indicates that the university has not been formally assessed by these specific agencies.
