How to choose between IELTS and TOEFL?
The two main English language proficiency tests accepted at universities are the TOEFL and IELTS. IELTS syllabus and exam pattern are nearly similar to TOEFL. Both exams contain 4 sections, namely Reading, listening, speaking, and writing. Although the pattern is similar, the grading scale differs between both of them.
Here's some factors which might help you choose the exam which is best suited for you:
- Computer Based Speaking vs Oral Speaking Interview
In TOEFL, the Speaking section is done over the computer like all other sections of the test. Recorded questions will be played and the student speaks into a microphone to give an answer. With the IELTS, you’ll be having a conversation with a real human.
- Computer Based Exam vs. Paper Based Exam
Almost everyone who takes the TOEFL will do so on the computer. You are allowed to take notes on scratch paper, but all your official answers will be submitted on the computer. The IELTS, on the other hand, is offered either on the computer or with pencil and paper at many test locations.
- Writing Essay Lengths and Duration
Both exams require students to write 2 essays for the Writing section. However, IELTS gives you 60 minutes to write a recommended 400 words, while TOEFL only gives you 50 minutes but recommends about 500 words.
Conclusion
If you get nervous in exam halls or interacting with humans, TOEFL could be a better choice and IELTS in the other case
