Studying abroad is the dream of millions in developing and/or underdeveloped countries. The exposure brings better knowledge, skills, experiences, and a recognized degree. It’s an option many consider, but only some get the opportunity. If you’re lucky enough, you need to make the most of it.
To help out those fortunate few, here is a step-by-step guide.
1.Pick a country and university
Countries are different in terms of the educational environment. Decide which country provides you with the best opportunities. Don’t decide on the basis of climate or the sights. Keep in mind that this is an opportunity of a lifetime; you wouldn’t want to ruin it by irrational decisions. Ask friends who already study abroad. Compare available options. Next, choose the university that best suits your educational goals, has better resources, facilities, materials, and offers the programs you want to take.
2.Check eligibility and pre-requisites
It’s better to make sure you’re eligible before you apply. The respective university’s site would contain all the information you need to check eligibility. Several programs demand pre-requisites. Double check everything.
3.Meet an education counselor/Academic Advisor
Early in the process, it’s better to consult an Education Counselor. Discuss your academic requirements and get help from the professionals. They will guide you throughout the selection process. Review your application deadline, program details, and other requirements.
4.Review your finances
This could very well be the first and most important step. Consider the cost of your education, accommodation, travel, etc. Are you able to support yourself? Will someone sponsor to help with your expenses? It’s quite expensive to study abroad, so make sure you have the answer to these questions.
5.Apply for financial aid
If you need some help with your finances, apply for financial aid. Contact a financial aid counselor to get your application reviewed. Many universities offer scholarships to help their new students get started. Merit based scholarships cover a large portion of the education cost. Keep an out for such opportunities.
6. Passport and visa
If you don’t have a passport, apply for it right now. Your passport needs to stay valid for at least 6 months following the date of your arrival in the country. Your application process requires the passport details. Contact your local authorities for Visa Application. These processes may take time, so get started now to get everything up to date well within time.
7. Apply online
Once you’ve decided which university you’d like to study at, start the application process. You can apply online. Start early as it takes time to gather all the required material i.e. transcripts, references etc. Complete and submit all the application material before the deadline provided by the university, as late materials are not accepted. If your application is accepted, you’ll be notified by an email notification, approximately 6 weeks after the deadline. Congratulations, you’re quite near to achieving your goal!
8.Pack your bags and depart
Start packing. Review the start dates of your program and book a flight. Learn all you can about your new home. Gather information about its history, food, customs, sights, and the local news. This will keep you aware of what the issues of the day are. Prepare yourself.
These guidelines are sure to help you out in planning your study abroad. Double check everything. This is an opportunity most people only dream of. Get the maximum out of it and work hard. Best of luck for the life ahead!
