Query regarding visa appointment cancellation

Recently, my friend (who is preparing for the fall of 2023) scheduled a VI in April, however on that  same day, he is taking a sem exam. My friend want to reschedule it but what if the visa appointment slots did not open for may nd June months before my friend vi So we can not reschedule it ryt !? So, If my friend cancel the visa appointment, will he be considered a rejected applicant or a fresher only the next time we schedule a visa slot? And if we cancel the vi ... The next time when you are booking visa slot we can book normally ryt !? Any idea abt visa appointment cancellation!?
