2 to 3 months are enough..spare the last month for mock tests, 1 every alternate day, give around 10, in a classroom environment to replicate the feeling of the actual GRE

That's a very important point that you've brought up here. Last-minute studying might work when you're trying to excel in exams that test your knowledge. However, GRE is a skill-based exam. Improving skills like reading, writing, mathematical reasoning or building vocabulary is time-consuming for most people. 

In my experience, most people take anywhere between 1 to 6 months to prepare for the GRE. The actual number would vary based on your initial skill level in each of the topics tested on the GRE and how much time you actually have! :-)
