After taking your gre, you start sending application. What they forget is, your awa score is counted here. Suppose you have scored 2.5 or 3 in awa. It means you are below average. But in your SOP, you are writing in very fluent English. What does it mean. someone else is writing it for you, which is unethical and wrong. Result ? Your application gets rejected. Or in simple words, you do not get admission. Now you can write it in your own words. Every university has its panel to go through your sop, lor, scores. Do you think, panel seriously want to go through your language, which is bad as per their standards. No. !!

Thus awa is important.

Now if you are planning for thesis MS or Phd. Then writing will be inevitable part of your course. Thus they expect you to be very good in writing.
