Founded in 1970, Alberta's Athabasca Uuniversity was the first one to specialize in distance education in Canada. It is one of four comprehensive universities in Alberta. It was established with the goal of removing barriers to adult learners' access to education all around the world. It is also one of Alberta's four public comprehensive universities and one of Canada's top-ranked higher education institutions.
