NOTE: The below views/statistics are indicative. Opinions and experiences may vary from person-to-person.

This article doesn’t guide you how to prepare for VISA interview; many published stories are there for that. In this, I would like to share few real-life student interview experiences with you, starting with a shocking but positive one!!!

NOTE: V- Visa officer I- Interviewee

Location: Delhi

V: What does your father do?

I: He is a retired army officer.

V: What was his rank?

I: He was a colonel.

V: You visa is approved, enjoy your stay there!

I: Thank you very much.

There are times you go in shock and become the happiest at the same moment. The above is not an exception! Reality is something which is beyond expectations. Interviews also happen like this when your fate is damn good!

A tensed and interesting one:-

Consulate: Mumbai

An American guy about 30 yrs old rejected one H1B visa before this.

I: Good morning sir! How are you doing today?

V: (with a serious face) Good! Pass me your I20.

I: Yes sir.

V: You’ve applied for how many universities?

I: 4. 3 accepted.

V: What are they?

I: (told)

V: (typing something in the computer, after 3 minutes) have you ever been to Liberia?

I: Sorry…?

V: (stopped typing) have you been to Liberia or do you have any links to Liberia?

I: No. (With a strong voice and that question was unexpected)

V: Your plans after the course?

I: Shall return to India and work as a Project lead.

V: Who is your sponsor?

I: (told)

V: (typing seriously on the computer, five minutes passed)

I: (I’m rejected- Inner voice)

V: (took blue form with one case number written) your application will be put in administrative processing and it will take 2-3 weeks

I: So, is my visa approved?

V: Can’t tell anything now as we have to look into your case, but you can track online. (Gave blue form with 221g)

The result was out the very next day and it was a happy ending, finally!

Consulate: Hyderabad

I: Good Afternoon

V: How are you?

I: Fine ma’am

V: So, which college you are going?

I: SUNY buffalo, for pursuing MS in CS

V: In CS ok, tell something you know about Java

I: (told some basic things)

V: Who is sponsoring you?

I: My father, brother and taken a loan too

V: Is this the first time you are applying for visa?

I: Yes ma’am

V: (After typing for 2 minutes, handling my passport back with rejection paper starting failed to show ties) Sorry this time I’m rejecting you

I: Ma’am, may I know the reason?

V: I doubt you are going for study purpose.

Really depressing one, I say. Remember, you must need to show some evidence of strong ties with your home country, to study in your dream country.

Proper documents you show are only half the story. Remaining half matters!

Success rates of visa:-

J1 visa- 75%

F1 visa- 65%

M1 visa- 35%

US visa official quote: “People who are between 18 and 37 and single attract our attention.”

But as always, experiences take our attention!
