I do not have a particularly high opinion of "Automobile Engineering" in the USA, as I think that much of that curriculum which distinguishes it from "Mechanical Engineering" is at the expense of more "core" knowledge, and is stuff which can be learned either on-the-job or extracurricular. Very few "Automotive Engineers" have degrees in "Automotive Engineering"--instead they are ME, Civil, Aero, and Electrical.

I would instead suggest somebody focus on an ME curriculum with solid ties to automotive industry. Some schools in this area include:

University of Michigan

Kettering University

Ohio State University

Purdue University

University of Iowa

University of South Carolina

George Washington University

There are a lot of others, but all of these are universities which seem to produce a good number of automotive engineers from their ME programs.
