1. Get your transcripts from your college/university. Open 1 and keep a scanned pdf copy. I would suggest ordering a couple of extra copies for a lifetime in case required for future use like if you decide to pursue another degree.. It will be difficult to order after a few years as the procedure to order might change. 
2. Some universities require mark sheets instead of transcripts. Get a set of photocopies of mark sheets attested by a college or university stamp. Save a scanned copy of the attested markets.
3. Read about universities and professors whose research matches your profile. You will need the info to write in the SOP.
4. Many universities provide a fee waiver if you attend their education fair or attend a university webinar. You can also get your doubts solved at these events. You can add your email in the 'get to know more' section of the program that you are interested in. 
5. If the program requires a WES or ECE evaluation, get it ready.
6. Side by side while researching programs, get LOR ready. Inform your professors about the universities you will be applying to. Save a scanned copy of the LOR.
7. Do not follow a standard template for SOP or personal statement. The admission committee has seen a lot of them. And your chances might decrease if you follow an std. template. 
8. Most universities accept unofficial versions of test scores for admission. This means that you will have to send official scores via ETS only if you get admission. Pls, check the program requirements for the same. 
9. Most importantly apply early in august or early September. It will definitely help you to secure admission to some universities.

2. Get the LOR, SOP, CV ready
3. If applying to California based universities, go to the calstate portal and fill out the application form. For other universities, go to their respective portals for application. 
4. You might have to officially send the GRE and TOEFL scores , transcripts/ attested marksheets to the universities if required

Simultaneously, start looking for bank loans and stuff.. you might have to submit loan letter at the time of application for some universities.

Some universities might also require WES evaluation to be done.
