About GRE

Graduate Record Examination or GRE is a standard admission test pursued by prospective students aspiring to enter a graduate or professional school abroad. Educational Testing Service (ETS) is a non-profit organization that owns, conducts, and administers GRE assessments worldwide.

There are two types of GRE tests - GRE General Test and GRE Subject Test. The GRE General Test assesses the verbal reasoning, quantitative ability, and analytical writing skills of the applicants from across the world applying for graduate and post-graduate courses. The GRE Subject Test assesses the skills, ability, and knowledge in a specific subject or field of study.

The GRE scores are accepted worldwide by several business and law schools for pursuing post-graduate and doctorate programs. The subsequent sections in this article provide details of GRE examination fees for students from diverse global locations (including India) and payment alternatives available to them.

GRE Exam Fee Structure

GRE form fees depend on your country of origin and the type of GRE test you aspire to enrol in. Consequently, the GRE exam cost differs for the General and Subject tests. While, the GRE General Test cost varies as per the location of the applicants, the cost of the Subject Test is uniform all over the world. Irrespective of the location of the applicants, ETS states GRE fees in US dollars.

  • Debit or Credit Card (MasterCard, Visa, JCB, Discover, American Express)

  • Certified Checks, Personal Paper Checks or E-check (drawn only against US bank accounts)

  • PayPal

  • Money Order

  • Voucher (sponsored organisations and institutions issue prepaid vouchers with a specified number to the applicants for paying GRE test fees. These vouchers are valid for one year from the issue date).

Applicants must follow the ETS guidelines while selecting any of the above payment methods for paying their GRE Exam fee.

Waiver of GRE Fee

In case you have financial hardships, you can avail the GRE Fee Waiver Service offered under the GRE Fee Reduction Program. ETS gives a GRE Fee Reduction Voucher that college seniors or unenrolled college graduates can redeem to appear for a single General and Subject Test at half of the regular exam fee cost. Not only this, but they also get access to online test preparation materials worth $100! ETS issues these vouchers on a first-come, first-served basis. The Fee Reduction Program is available only to the unemployed resident aliens or citizens of the US who are above 18 years of age, are planning to take a GRE test, and meet the eligibility requirements.
